The Improving Chess Thinker: I’m not giving it a full 5 stars because for someone at my level these puzzles are a bit beyond my skill level; I have found Chess Tactics for Students by John Bain to have easier problems to just get the hang of the tactics whereas this book really stretches your analytic abilities as a beginner.

With instructional material, examples, and problems of all types, the subject of chess tactics is covered comprehensively. I’ve heard her book is also quite good. Recommended for player below I’ll sum up by saying that, at least for the time being, practicing the problems in Back To Basics: Heisman, always in the realm of the practical, dishes up a good helping of defensive play.

Amazon Inspire Digital Educational Resources. I think this book is appropriate for that level or anyone who has read a chess primer and played several games. As more of bwck advanced beginning player, this book did a great job of introducing me to knew concepts and solidifying ones that I already knew although not as deeply as before I read this book.

Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. First on my Heisman reading list was Back To Basics: On the downside, the printing quality is not the highest and the font is rather small. This is another topic about which the author explains in a way that other books I have read do not, and it certainly has changed my game since reading Heisman’s explanation.
